Origins
In 2019, our founders looked at the way UK organisations were responding to Subject Access Requests since the introduction of UK GDPR in 2018. The work was manual, slow, and expensive — and the existing software was costly on-premise tooling that small councils and law firms couldn't justify.
Smartbox launched in September 2020 to fix that. Since launch the platform has expanded well beyond SAR, into FOI, investigations, breach response and evidence disclosure — but the original purpose stands: making regulated work tractable for British organisations.
